This new medium, he said, was “the refuge of every would-be painter, every painter too ill-endowed or too lazy to complete his studies” and to embrace it was a sign of “blindness” and “imbecility.”

To be fair, photography did ultimately have negative effects on art. Modern art's attempt to be as ugly and non-representational as possible is partially an effort to differentiate itself from photography.
